We need to get rid of whiteness, not decenter it. The concept of whiteness is just as harmful as any other race based categorization. The problem is classification along racial lines, because race literally doesn't exist, except as a way to elevate one group over another. Race is the problem. And terms like PoC and white just reinforce those harmful frames. All of it has to go. It's easy to talk about what has been wrong in the past - the politics of grievance, and these terms are only really useful to do that - and we do need to deal with the legacy of all that, but that can't be allowed to stall progress. It's harder to talk about where we must go, because those frames haven't been set yet. But we have to start.

My suggestion for looking forward; we need an inclusive in-group label that let's everyone in. We can't start with a division between equator people and northern latitude people. We can keep ethnic labels if we want, for historical reasons, though I don't really care about all of that either. My grandmother says we are Irish, but she grew up in New York City. Are we Irish? No. Not for a long time. But what is the new in-group going to be called? If we limit it to America, it could simply be American.

My family is very very blended. I'm on the pale, northern latitude side, and much of my family are somewhere between that and the darker equator based side of the range, with every imaginable combination and geographical backstory. But nothing intrinsic makes any of us better than any other. It's not about intrinsic qualities, it's about character - individual character. How do we get there more broadly, and get rid of these destructive in-group identities?
